Fences are a linear-foot problem with posts on a spacing; decks are an area problem plus rails and stairs. These calculators estimate posts, rails, pickets or panels, deck area, and a cost range from editable unit prices. They do not check HOA rules, property lines, frost-depth footings, or ledger flashing. A cheap estimate that skips permits or underground utilities is not a savings. How to measure
For fences, walk the run with a tape and note gates, corners, and slope. Post spacing is commonly 6 or 8 feet on center—match what your panel or rail system requires. For decks, measure the planned length and width, then add railing along open edges and count stair treads separately if you know them.

- How do I count fence posts?
- Posts = (run length ÷ spacing) rounded up, plus one for the end of that run. Add extra posts for corners and gate openings. Sloped yards may need more posts or stepped panels.
- Is deck cost per square foot enough?
- It is a planning shortcut. Rails, stairs, permits, footings, and composite vs. pressure-treated lumber swing the total. Use the breakdown fields and then get bids that specify lumber grade and footing schedule.
